And he said to me, ‘Dear. why not to stress on the ways as to how we can build a new habit, the positive act than to stress on the ways as to how to mend an old rugged pesky habit?’ Both these approaches are different. When we talk about building a new positive habit and keep feeding it until the bad one sits on the bottom with negligible effect. That’s how we see Positive Psychology comes into play.

Positive Psychology is the psychological study of impacts of positive attitude, positive thinking or optimism on human mind and body as to how we can flourish ourselves as human and boost our level of happiness by positivism. We all have negative thoughts and most of the time we are so much overwhelmed by them that they cease us from moving forward.

When we keep cherishing our negative thoughts with paying so much heed to them, we almost start jamming ourselves. We become less prone to challenges and change. Our negativity hinders every time when we intend to experience something new by showing us only dark side of the matter.

Human brain is too flexible an organ. Its true that changing thought pattern is too difficult a task but its not impossible. We can rewire our brains with continuous practice. What we think, the brain responds accordingly like if we think positive, the brain will respond accordingly and same is the case with negative thinking. Our thinking affects our attitude. So rather than working on negative thoughts what if we start stuffing our brain with positive thoughts which will ultimately change our behaviour.

When we start thinking positive, we start becoming creative and happy. Its a therapy for psychologically ailing persons. Positive thinking can be developed by different acts as suggested by Shawn Achor, a Positive Psychology expert:

  • 3 gratitudes
  • Journaling
  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Random acts of Kindness

If these are done on continuous basis, we can actually rewire your brain, allowing your brain to actually work more optimistically and more successfully. I started doing couple of acts mentioned above.

I started doing exercise for 15 minutes. It made me feel happier, lighter and a little bit more optimist. It helped me clear my mind from negative thoughts for some time and let me take a little bit control of myself. I also did meditation which not only relaxed me but helped me attain more concentration and more control over my appetite.

I wrote recommendations for two of my friends as acts of kindness which gave me fulfilling feeling that I am doing something which a good friend or more precisely a good human should do. Overall, this experience was quite good for me as it helped me tilt my thinking towards positivity and made me more happier.. I hope if I continued with it on consistent basis, I’ll definitely be seeing a marked positive change in myself.

A friend of mine is struggling with negative thoughts and perpetual stress. He,most of the time, remains sad. I would suggest him all the above cited 5 steps to positivity and happiness but at least 3 seem more important to me viz,

- Meditation — Exercise — Random acts of kindness

Meditation and Exercise will surely not only help him ease stress but make him more focussed, and more positive and happier. Random acts of kindness will give him satisfying, joyful and fulfilling feelings.

On a concluding note, I want to say, Human brain is adaptable to new things. So, we should start enhancing our positivity by doing the acts suggested by Shawn Achor to be more happy and successful in life by having a growth mindset by boosting positivity.
